A Public Works Department (PWD) assistant engineer was allegedly assaulted and had black paint smeared on his face by some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers in Bazpur, Udham Singh Nagar district, on Sunday. The video of the incident went viral on social media.
According to the information, sub-divisional magistrate, Bazpur, Richa Singh, PWD officials and other administrative officers were inspecting flood affected areas. During the inspection, BJP state executive member Rajesh Kumar and some other BJP workers allegedly confronted the PWD assistant engineer over the condition of roads and drainage works.
The situation reportedly escalated during the discussion. The party workers allegedly assaulted the engineer and smeared black paint on his face. Someone recorded the incident on a mobile phone and the video later went viral on social media.
The Udham Singh Nagar additional district magistrate (ADM) Pankaj Upadhyay said that strict action would be taken if negligence was found at any level. He directed officials to perform their duties seriously and complete necessary work on time. The administration has also indicated that a case would be registered if negligence is established.
Police said that the PWD has not yet submitted a written complaint. Further action will depend on the complaint and investigation.
