Residents along Rajpur Road, particularly from Jakhan to Old Mussoorie Road, have voiced their concerns regarding the heightened traffic congestion and disturbances caused by tourists during the New Year celebrations. They have noted that in order to avoid the disruptive activities associated with tourism, such as loud music in vehicles, heavy traffic and reckless driving, they are refraining from leaving their homes unnecessarily. The authorities must consider the impact of tourism policies and prioritise the well-being of local residents, especially those residing in the Rajpur Road area, the local residents said.
A local resident near Jakhan area Sunita Chaddha said that an influx of tourists from Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and beyond has begun as the New Year approaches. Unfortunately, the annual increase in visitor numbers results in major inconvenience for the locals. The rise in tourist activity has increased traffic congestion in the area. Further, local residents have been adversely affected by various disturbances caused by tourists, such as loud music late into the night and excessive alcohol consumption. The authorities must address these issues and consider the social well-being of the residents, which has been significantly disrupted, she said.
Another local resident, Hashmeet Singh said, “I have refrained from going outside for nearly a week due to the increased traffic congestion caused by increased tourist footfalls in the Rajpur Road area. It is disheartening to witness the negative impact on the city’s atmosphere caused by the disruptive behaviour often exhibited by tourists. This situation has become an annual occurrence that ultimately disrupts the celebration of the New Year for locals like us.”
The founding president of the Rajpur Community Initiative Reenu Paul told this correspondent that the rise in tourist numbers during the summer vacation, New Year celebrations and snowfall is an annual feature. Every year during these periods, she has witnessed various accidents in the vicinity of Rajpur Road. As a result, local residents have experienced significant financial and emotional burdens. Many residents have suffered damage to their properties due to these accidents. Additionally, the traffic congestion, loud music, alcohol consumption and other nuisance caused by tourists during this time negatively impact the local community. She emphasised that both she and many others have ceased visiting locations outside their residences from now until the celebrations commence to avoid the disturbances associated with tourism.
Regarding the recent decision by the authorities to permit hotels and eateries to operate for 24 hours for a few days during New Year celebrations, she emphasised that such a tourism policy is not beneficial as it will exacerbate the conditions and hardships faced by local residents. Governmental support for tourism should align with limits and take into account the welfare of both visitors and the local community, she added.
