Hip replacement can last lifelong in certain cases

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said that a total hip replacement (THR) can last lifelong in certain cases depending on at which age the surgery is done. He said this while speaking at a hip symposium organised by Uttaranchal Orthopaedic Association. The symposium was jointly inaugurated by the association’s founder president Dr Sanjay, current president Dr SN Singh, and organising secretary Dr Gaurav Gupta.

Sanjay quoted from ‘The Lancet’ stating that hip replacement is the operation of the century. Following the invention of bone cement and the development of Sir John Charnley’s low-friction arthroplasty, THR has become a widely performed and highly effective surgery in today’s clinical landscape. It is not done as often in India because hip arthritis isn’t as common here as it is in developed countries.

A common and important question asked by every patient who is advised to undergo a THR is about how long the replacement will last. This is a valid and significant concern for both the patient and the surgeon, as it directly impacts long-term outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Other doctors including Dr SS Mohanty, Dr Vijay Kumar, Dr BS Murthy, Dr Mudit Khanna and Dr Hemanshu Kochhar also shared their views on various aspects of hip replacement surgery.
