The Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat held a meeting with all district magistrates and district in-charges of police regarding the damage caused due to heavy rainfall in Kumaon division so far. He said that heavy rains caused severe damage in the Kumaon region, especially in the plain areas. There are clear instructions from chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to immediately prepare an estimation under the disaster management fund and present it before the government in time so that the departments concerned can start the work accordingly. “I have instructed all DMs to make a report about the works and funds required to improve the situation,” Rawat said. He also instructed all the DMs to identify places that can be turned into relief camps to tackle any type of disaster throughout the year. These camps must always be operational and should have basic facilities like electricity, water and ration among others. He also directed all SSPs and SPs to deploy police force at vulnerable places in their respective districts. He said that it was also reported that many hotels and schools in Nainital city connect the water from their roofs directly to the sewerage lines. Due to this, the sewerage water accumulates on the roads during the rainy season causing nuisance to local people. This sewer water also gets into the lake and pollutes it. Rawat said that he has ordered the Irrigation department to identify such hotels and schools and issue notices before taking strict action against them. He also informed that all Kumaon districts are giving relief amounts to the families affected due to heavy rainfall. “The administration has issued the relief amount to 1,300 families in Udham Singh Nagar district, 224 in Nainital district and 2,000 families in Champawat district. The survey of the remaining families is ongoing. The amount will be issued to the remaining affected families soon after the survey,” he said.
