Relocation of medical college: Massive rally held in protest

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ New Tehri

A public demonstration erupted at the New Tehri district headquarters as the villagers, traders and members of the agitating organisation–Tehri Medical College Nirman Samyukta Sangharsh Samiti- took to the streets on Friday to oppose the ongoing discussions about shifting the proposed Tehri Medical College from New Tehri to Pifalti in Gaja area.

Those who participated in the rally affirmed that they would not allow the medical college to be relocated under any circumstances. In a show of support on the issue, the markets in New Tehri, Bouradi, and Bipuram remained completely closed during the rally.

The senior functionaries of the agitating outfit said that the process of constructing a medical college in the Iniyan area of New Tehri had been initiated in 2022-23, and that THDC had begun preliminary construction work under government directives.

The speakers noted that despite announcements by two chief ministers, the relocation of the medical college has caused widespread resentment among the people of the area. “The huge rally conveyed the unity of the people of Tehri on the medical college issue and they will not allow it to be relocated under any circumstances. If the government relocates the proposed medical college, a massive public movement will be launched to resist it,” warned a speaker who addressed the rally.   .
