Relying solely on online material not advisable for board exams: Experts

With the board examination not far away, the sales of previous question paper books and subject guides have not seen any significant growth compared to the previous year, bookshop owners said. The decreased sales can be attributed to various factors including the easy accessibility and cost-effectiveness of online resources that tempt students to prepare for their exams through the internet. However, experts point out that relying solely on online material may not provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the subject matter needed for the board examination.

The advent of the internet and its widespread availability have brought about changes in the learning approach of students, which may have implications for the future. Bookshop owner Ramesh Induri said that in the past years the sale of subject guides, solved question papers of previous year and other study materials generally increased as the board examination approached. However, with the advent of the internet, the sale of such books has significantly decreased. This year, the sale has decreased by more than 50 per cent due to the easy availability of content on the internet, he added.

“The advent of the internet has greatly facilitated the process of acquiring information. Everything related to any subject, be it difficult or easy questions, is readily available on the internet. Additionally, I personally rely on the internet for half of my board examination preparation, including solving previous year’s question papers. The affordability, easy access and time-saving aspects of internet study are enticing factors for students like myself, particularly during the board examination,” said a student Paras Uniyal.

Professor at DAV PG College Prashant Singh told this correspondent that learning from books has no alternative. While he acknowledges that many children use the internet for studying and preparing for exams, he emphasised that internet learning is only temporary and does not provide in-depth knowledge. It also affects time management during board exams. He urged the students to opt for regular studying to achieve the best marks during board examination.
