In latest news from Uttarakhand, 28-year-old rifleman of Garhwal Scouts Battalion Shailendra Singh Kathait died while on duty at Goldung Post of Niti Valley along the India-China border. Shailendra’s maternal uncle Om Prakash said that when he was going with others for patrolling, his foot had slipped and he had fallen from glacier. By the time he had been pulled out, he had died, he added. He was from Kumrada village of Chinyalisaur, Uttarkashi district.
Shailendra had joined the army in 2017 with his maiden posting in Jammu and Kashmir. Thereafter, he was posted in Niti Valley along the India-China border.
It is learnt from his family members that his father died two months ago and he is survived by his mother, wife and two daughters aged five and one years.
The news of Sailendra’s death plunged his village in a deep gloom of mourning. The village head Rajendra Singh said that they were waiting for his mortal remains to arrive and he would be cremated with full military honours in the presence of all villagers.
