The director general of Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE) and Forest Research Institute (FRI) director Arun Singh Rawat has expressed concern about rising water pollution. He stressed on the need for collaboration with other organisations to address this important issue. Rawat said this while delivering the inaugural address in a webinar on ‘advances in forest hydrology- challenges and opportunities’ organised by the institute’s Forest Ecology and Climate Change division. The purpose of this webinar was to discuss and develop an understanding of the issues related to forest hydrology and to develop future strategies of research work in the discipline of forest hydrology.
Speaking on the occasion, Rawat emphasised on the need for keeping abreast of the recent happenings and research in these fields. He said that there is a lot of pressure on water resources due to the rising population and because of this the majority is forced to drink packaged water in India. Detailed studies are also required as work done in the past and present is on a watershed basis which was like a pilot study, he added.
Later, the technical session included presentation on water budgeting and ecosystem services in forested watershed by Water Technology Centre, Indian Agricultural Research Institute principal scientist Arjamadutta Sarangi, advances in monitoring of forest hydrological processes by IIT Roorkee associate professor Sumit Sen and hydrological studies by FRI by institute scientist Parmanand Kumar.
