RTO pushes safe driving during road safety month

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

To promote safe driving behaviour, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) Dehradun has been actively conducting various awareness and enforcement activities as part of the National Road Safety Month 2026. These activities began on January 16 and will continue until February 14.

The regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) for the Dehradun Division, Anita Chamola stated that the aim of these activities is to raise awareness about safe driving practices to help reduce accidents. As part of this campaign, road safety banners have been installed and posters pasted along major city routes, featuring key messages which include no drink & drive, say no to triple riding, helmets for both rider & pillion and give way to ambulances among others.

Chamola further said that, in addition to enforcement, RTO is encouraging responsible citizens to foster a positive road safety culture. This includes highlighting helmet and seatbelt rule followers through appreciation posters. A special campaign, “Responsible Parents / Responsible Mothers,” focuses on mothers wearing helmets and ensuring that their children (aged four years and older) do the same during school drop-offs and pick-ups. She added that moreover, school road safety activities are being conducted to educate children and build a culture of safety. These include drawing, poster and slogan competitions, as well as displaying children’s road safety artworks through posters.

Chamola emphasised that other initiatives during this month include speed control and radar gun awareness. Enforcement against over-speeding is actively being carried out using speed radar guns and visual awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of speed control for saving lives (rather than merely issuing fines) being displayed on banners.

Further, the Transport department will be opening a Children’s Traffic Park in Dehradun in 2026 for interactive road safety learning. Other activities include dialogues, rallies and upcoming events. Preparations are also underway for grand programmes such as a Road Safety Marathon and a Road Safety Carnival.

Chamola said that banners have been installed along key routes, including, Clock Tower-Dilaram Chowk-Diversion–Sai Mandir, Saharanpur Road–Darshanalal Chowk, Kanak Chowk–Lansdowne Chowk–Race Course–Gandhi Park–Ashley Hall- IT Park, among others.
