The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is all set to conduct an enforcement campaign for e-rickshaws in the Dehradun district on March 13 and 14. Informing this, the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Anita Chamola said on Thursday that the complaints about e-rickshaws are being registered through the CM helpline number, among others.

“We have been observing that these vehicles, meant for passenger transport, are being used for cargo purposes in violation of the rules. This is why RTO has decided to carry out a two-day enforcement drive covering Dehradun, Rishikesh and Vikasnagar,” she said.

She further said that the campaign will specifically target locations such as the railway station, ISBT and Hanuman Chowk.  “Action will be taken against those found violating the rules like driving sans driving licence, using vehicles designated for goods transport as passenger vehicles and vice versa and minors operating e-rickshaws. Besides, documentation of these vehicles will be scrutinised,” she said.

She said that if any of these violations involving e-rickshaws are found by the RTO team during the enforcement drive the violators will be slapped with penalties. “This may include issuing fines, confiscating vehicles and taking further necessary actions,” she added.

Chamola said that they had initially intended to carry out an enforcement drive for e-autos alongside e-rickshaws. However, they have now opted to focus specifically on e-rickshaws, as their registration numbers in Dehradun district are higher compared to e-autos.

In Dehradun, there are 5,124 registered e-rickshaws, with 2,155 in Vikasnagar and 1,516 in Rishikesh. The deployment of personnel at the designated locations for this drive will be decided soon, she added.
