PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Friday distributed seasonal vegetable saplings among officers and employees at the secretariat premises as part of its ‘Swachh Doon-Harit Doon’ initiative aimed at promoting kitchen gardens, healthy food and a greener environment.

During the programme, officials and employees were encouraged to grow vegetables at their homes, offices and other available spaces. MCD officials said that even small kitchen gardens can help families access fresh vegetables while making better use of available space.

They said that promoting kitchen gardens can also encourage people to take a greater interest in environmental conservation. Growing vegetables at home can reduce dependence on packaged produce and encourage the use of organic waste for composting and other gardening activities.

The initiative also focused on encouraging residents to adopt simple practices that can contribute to cleaner and greener surroundings. Officials urged people to plant vegetables and other saplings wherever suitable space is available and to take responsibility for maintaining their surroundings.

They said that such activities are aimed at taking the message of cleanliness and greenery beyond government offices and encouraging wider public participation. The MCD appealed to residents to make cleanliness and greenery a collective effort and contribute to keeping their homes, workplaces and neighbourhoods clean and green.

The programme was organised on the directions of Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey who said that similar awareness and plantation activities would help to strengthen the ‘Swachh Doon-Harit Doon’ campaign.
