State Commission for Protection of Child Right may urge the chief secretary Radha Raturi to convene a meeting on the actions to be taken against the unregistered madarsas operating in Dehradun. Informing this, its chairperson Geeta Khanna said that this meeting is needed against the backdrop of an unregistered madarsa operating in Azad Colony of Dehradun.
Talking to The Pioneer, she further said that the existence of the unregistered madarsa had come to their notice during a meeting between the commission and the madarsa functionaries. “The madarsa functionaries failed to show essential documents such as their building permits, affiliation certificates and other necessary credentials. Further, they had not submitted a list of the enrolled students as per the requirement. They even acknowledged that their institution is unregistered. Consequently, we instructed them to complete the registration process,” she said.
Piqued with the dilly dallying on the part of the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) and the State education department in addressing such matters, the commission has written a letter to them, seeking prompt action. “We have urged the State government to conduct a survey of the unregistered madarsas operating across the State,” she said.
To recall, following a report of 30 students being hospitalised after they suffered food poisoning while consuming meals at the Azad Colony madarsa, Khanna conducted an inspection recently. She further noted that approximately 250 students are enrolled there with over 60 students coming from other States like Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, she found 80 students staying cramped in a single room with inadequate ventilation.
