PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Haridwar

To promote environmental protection and biodiversity, the ‘Seed Sanjivani Abhiyan’ has been launched in Haridwar district on Friday at the initiative of the chief development officer Lalit Narayan Mishra. The campaign’s message is: ‘Don’t throw away seeds, use them to create the greenery of the future.’

Under the campaign, all government departments, offices, schools, municipal bodies, public undertakings and aided institutions have been assigned the target of growing 500 saplings each from fruit and vegetable seeds.

The CDO stated that people often throw away fruit and vegetable seeds, considering them useless. “However, growing saplings from these seeds can make a significant contribution to environmental protection,” he said, adding that the campaign aims to increase greenery through public participation and transform tree plantation into a mass movement.

He further stated that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been formulated for the successful operation of the campaign, which will enable the production of quality saplings at a low cost. The saplings will be planted during Harela festival, World Environment Day programmes and others related to tree plantation.

Mishra said that if every family pledges to preserve the seeds at home and grow them into plants, millions of plants could be grown in Haridwar alone.
