The district hospitals and other health centres of the State Health department located in the mountainous areas of the State are continuing to suffer from the lack of specialist doctors. However, seven posts of specialist doctors are still vacant in the district hospital of Dehradun, the provisional State capital. The data shows that the Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital has 32 sanctioned posts for specialists, of which 25 are filled with permanent doctors. The figure also includes Gandhi Shatabdi Eye Hospital, which functions as part of the District Hospital.
Talking to The Pioneer, District Hospital principal medical superintendent Dr Yatendra Singh said seven specialist posts remain vacant.
He said the Medicine department has three sanctioned posts (physician), of which one is filled. All three sanctioned posts in the Surgery department are filled.
In Gynaecology, three of four sanctioned posts are filled, while all four posts in Paediatrics are filled. All three posts in the Anaesthesia department are filled.
He further informed that in the Eye department, one of two sanctioned posts is filled. Both sanctioned posts in Orthopaedics are filled. In Radiology, one of two posts is filled. All three sanctioned posts in Pathology are filled. Both posts in ENT are filled.
The single sanctioned posts in Skin and Psychiatry are vacant. In Microbiology and Forensic departments, one post each is sanctioned and both are filled with permanent doctors, he added.
Singh further said that contractual doctors have also been deployed in some departments to manage services. This includes one in Medicine, two in Orthopaedics, two in Gynaecology and one in Paediatrics. Additionally, one specialist each has been attached to the Eye and Skin departments.
He informed that the hospital sends a monthly report on the status of doctors to the DG office. Whenever there is a need, the administration requests the concerned authorities to fill vacant posts.
Pertinently, despite being the district hospital in the provisional State capital, there is currently no sanctioned post for super-specialist doctors at the District Hospital.
