The incessant, torrential downpour across Nainital district has been adding to the woes of the people, blocking roads with boulders falling off the hills. As per the district disaster control room, heavy rain- triggered landslides and debris have caused vehicular movement being stalled on one State motor road and six rural motor roads. Besides, the falling of boulders from the hills on the Satyanarayan Mandir Marg located in the district headquarters created panic among the people. Consequently, the traffic movement came to a total standstill. As per the district meteorological department, 87 mm rain was recorded on Sunday.
The unabated rain has caused the water level of the Naini lake to rise. The water of the lake is now flowing above four feet and six inches. As per the information received from the district disaster control room, light vehicles were being allowed on the Nainital-Kilbury motorway with the route being completely shut down for heavy vehicles. Along with this, the rural motor roads-Maluti motor road, Balna-Walna motor road, Devlidhar-Sui motor road, Mornaula-Thali motor road, Harishtal motor road and Pan Katara-Kharad motor road-were completely closed for traffic movement.
