The Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Gurdip Sappal has demanded that the Union Home minister Amit Shah should resign for making derogatory comments on B R Ambedkar. Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan here on Monday, Sappal said that the entire country was stunned when the Home minister made an unsavory comment on Ambedkar. He said that the tone and tenor of the statement of Shah was such that it ridiculed the achievements and the works done by Ambedkar. Sappal said that the Congress wanted an apology from the Home minister for his comment but instead of condemning Shah, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP launched a counter offensive on the Congress party. The BJP leaders accused the Congress for disrespecting Ambedkar. “ It was the Congress party which made Ambedkar a minister in the first cabinet of the country. It was the Congress party which made Ambedkar the chairperson of the drafting committee of the constitution. BJP leaders are accusing the Congress party for not placing a picture of Ambedkar in parliament but everyone knows that the statue of Ambedkar was set up in the parliament in 1967 during the Congress regime,’’ he said.
The Congress leader said that Jawahar Lal Nehru and Ambedkar wanted to pass the Hindu code bill but due to opposition from RSS and a section of Congress leaders the bill could not be passed due to which an annoyed Ambedkar resigned from the union council of ministers. It was the RSS which burnt effigies of Ambedkar in the country against his stance on Hindu code bill which advocated right in property for women and inert caste marriage. Sappal said that the BJP leaders have an innate hatred for Ambedkar which came to the fore during the speech of Shah in parliament.
