Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami was felicitated at a function held by the Shri Venkateshwara University for Uttarakhand being the first Indian State to implement the Uniform Civil Code. At the function held at the university’s campus in Gajraula in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday, Dhami said the honour accorded to him is to the entire population of Uttarakhand as it is the people who made him capable of taking the historic decision.
The CM said that the credit for the implementation of the UCC should go to the makers of the Indian Constitution who had accorded place to the idea of UCC in the constitution as part of their vision for a society where all are equal. Dhami further said that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, Uttarakhand is moving ahead towards becoming a developed nation by 2047. “All the citizens of the nation will also enjoy equality in rights when India is established as a developed nation and this has started with Uttarakhand. It was under PM Modi guidance that the UCC could be implemented in Uttarakhand. The UCC also fulfills the dreams of Bhim Rao Ambedkar,” the CM said.
Dhami said that the UCC is the constitutional solution to any legal bias that might take place on the basis of caste, religion and gender. All the people in Uttarakhand have equal rights now with the implementation of the UCC. A new chapter of woman empowerment has started in the State and the Muslim will not have to suffer from practices like triple talaq, child marriage and halala. The women in Uttarakhand will not have to face bias when it comes to the right to inheritance or property. The UCC will make the legal process simpler and swifter, he said, while adding that many Muslim women had thanked him after the implementation of UCC in the State.
