Six dead, dozens injured after truck hits tractor trolley carrying devotees to Gurudwara

Six persons died and dozens were injured when the tractor trolley they were travelling in was hit by a truck on the Kichha-Sitarganj road in Udham Singh Nagar on Sunday. Expressing deep grief at the mishap, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the accident.

According to officials, the accident occurred at about 11 AM when a tractor trolley carrying about 50 residents of Shakti Farm to the Uttar Nagar Gurudwara was hit by a truck at Sirsa bend which falls in Uttar Pradesh. The mishap was followed by a tragic scene as the dead and injured were lying on the road till citizens and officials reached shortly to conduct rescue and relief efforts. The district magistrate Yugal Kishore Pant took charge of the rescue and relief efforts on receiving information about the mishap. He directed Health department officials to ensure necessary treatment for the injured admitted to government hospitals in Udham Singh Nagar and neighbouring Nainital district. Those being treated in private hospitals should also be monitored by the department, he said. Pant said that on the directions of the CM, a magisterial probe has been ordered into the accident with sub divisional magistrate of Sitarganj being appointed as the investigation officer. Those killed in the mishap have been identified as Shakti Farm residents Suman Kaur (15), Gurunamo Bai (30), Akash Singh (8), Raja Singh (6), Jassi (35) and Bhajan Singh (32).

Earlier when news of a truck hitting the tractor trolley from behind was broadcast, officials of the administration and police from Bahedi, Sitarganj and Kichha reached the site of the mishap. More than 50 persons from Shakti Farm were travelling to the weekly religious event at the Baba Budda Sahib Gurudwara in Uttam Nagar when a truck hit their vehicle from behind causing the tractor trolley to overturn on the road.

Later, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited the Sushila Tiwari hospital in Haldwani to check on the injured. Stating that the accident is tragic, he directed the district magistrates of Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar to ensure good treatment of the injured. From the CM relief fund, Dhami announced Rs two lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for the injured.
