Special Deepawali prayers held, Gangotri & Yamunotri set to be closed to public

Special prayers were held to celebrate Deepawali ahead of the closure of the portals of the Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines in Uttarkashi district on Friday. While Gangotri is slated to be closed to the public on November 2, Yamunotri will be closed on the following day. According to tradition, the portals of Gangotri will be closed on the occasion of Annakut on November 2 at 12:14 PM. The Utsav Doli of goddess Ganga will be taken from Gangotri to her winter abode in Mukhwa village with the closure of Gangotri temple’s portals. Devotees will be able to pay obeisance to the goddess at Mukhwa during the winter when the main shrine remains closed.
The Yamunotri temple will be closed on the occasion of Bhaiyaduj on November 3 at 12:05 PM. The Utsav Murti of Goddess Yamuna will be carried to her winter abode in Kharsali where devotees will be able to pay obeisance to her during the winter when the main shrine is closed to the public. The temple committees of Gangotri and Yamunotri have made all preparations for closure of the temples for the winter. Till Friday evening, 15,2,752 people had visited Gangotri and Yamunotri temples so far this year. Out of these, 7,10,210 had visited Yamunotri while 8,11,542 had visited Gangotri.
