State announces Jim Corbett Award on his 150th birth anniversary

Forest minister Subodh Uniyal announced that the Jim Corbett Award will be presented every year to individuals who make remarkable contributions in the fields of forest conservation, wildlife protection and environmental sustainability. The minister said this while speaking at the programme held to mark Corbett’s 150th birth anniversary here on Friday.

Uniyal said that Corbett was revered as the ‘Gora Sadhu’ due to his dedication to protecting forests. He added that the people of Uttarakhand must now become ‘Pahadi Sadhus’ and play an active role in conserving the environment.

Local MLA Diwan Singh Bisht said that Corbett played a crucial role in spreading awareness about the environment among the common people. Corbett Tiger Reserve director Saket Badola said that Corbett’s life continues to inspire both the public and forest officials.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Head of Forest Force) Sameer Sinha emphasised that anyone wishing to truly understand Corbett must read his writings and incorporate his values in their daily life.

A theatrical presentation based on Corbett’s life was also held on the occasion attended by various departmental officials and locals.
