Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey on Tuesday directed various departments to ensure effective and time-bound implementation of measures under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to improve the air quality in Dehradun.
Chairing a meeting of the district-level implementation committee, Pandey reviewed the major sources of air pollution in the city, measures being taken to control them and public awareness activities. He stressed the need for interdepartmental coordination and regular monitoring of the measures being implemented.
He directed the officials to closely monitor road dust, pollution from construction and demolition sites, open burning of waste and other polluting activities and ensure necessary action against violations.
Pandey also briefed about measures being taken to improve air quality, including vacuum-based road sweeping, dust control on roads and construction sites, expansion of green areas, plantation drives and awareness campaigns for segregation of wet and dry waste at source.
The municipal commissioner said that merely formulating plans would not be enough and stressed the need for their effective implementation and regular monitoring. He also called for strengthening information, education and communication activities to make citizens aware of the causes of air pollution and their role in controlling it. He appealed to residents not to burn waste in the open, segregate wet and dry waste at source, prevent construction material from spreading on roads and contribute to improving the city’s environment through plantation.
Officials from the Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board, Regional Transport Office and MCD attended the meeting.
