The Dehradun district administration is focusing on resuming the long-closed sewing unit at the Common Facility Centre (CFC) in Sahaspur. The administration is in the final stages of inaugurating the CFC equipped with modern machines.
According to officials, the sewing unit established in 2024 at the District Industries Centre near Sahaspur block has now been handed over to the Aastha Collector Level Federation, Sahaspur block. Equipped with about 25 to 30 modern sewing machines, the centre plans to train rural women and connect them with production and the market.
Initially, the unit provided sewing training to rural women but later closed. The district administration has now reactivated it and developed it as a CFC. Officials added that the district administration will pay special attention to the designing and quality of products prepared by women. Besides, private companies will be contacted to secure orders for self-help groups, they added.
Chief development officer Abhinav Shah stated that the CFC in Sahaspur had been operating as a training centre. Now it is being handed over to women SHGs for operation and a cluster has already been selected. The initiative will not only ensure optimum use of modern machines but also train rural women and enable them to establish self-employment. The reactivation of the centre will help many women become Lakhpati Didis, he added.
District project manager, REAP Sonam Gupta stated that the CFC was established near Sahaspur barrier by the District Industries Centre and houses several modern sewing machines. On the initiative of the district administration, it has been decided to hand over these machines to women of self-help groups. Many rural women in Sahaspur block are already skilled in sewing and these machines will create new employment opportunities and help increase their income.
