In view of the recent rise in online frauds through dubious loan apps, the Uttarakhand State Task Force (STF) has started the process to block crores of such SMSes that promote such apps to lure people. The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Cyber Crime, STF, Ankush Mishra informed that recently a Dehradun resident was duped of Rs 17 lakh through one of such dubious loan apps.
The team of the cyber crime police station of STF found in the initial investigation that several complaints of similar frauds through fake loan apps are also registered by many victims of the State in National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) of the central government. The STF formed a special team and registered a case on the matter under 15 different sections. Mishra said that STF combined all complaints to start proceedings against such frauds. The special team of cyber police has already taken the initiative to stop the operation of about 80 dubious loan apps.
Besides this, the team has also marked about 70 SMS headers which are used to lure or trick people to use those fake loan apps. The STF is taking action to block these marked SMS headers all over the country. If STF gets successful, crores of messages intended to scam people will be blocked across the country, added the DSP. The senior superintendent of police of STF, Ayush Agarwal informed that the Cybercrime Police Station of STF had also blocked six crores SMSes associated with dubious local, national and international websites in the past too. He has also appealed to the public not to take online loans from any unregistered organisation. If one becomes a victim of such scams, immediately register a complaint in the nearest police station or contact at cyber helpline number 1930 as maximum complaints against culprits by the victims can help the authorities to nab them sooner, said Agrawal.
