PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Following allegations of assault on teachers at the government polytechnic college in Pitthuwala area of the city, Dehradun senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pramendra Dobal suspended sub-inspector Mahesh Kandwal, who was posted in the Police Telecommunication branch on Sunday. Kandwal was suspended for not maintaining the dignity of his post and obstructing the government work of the college staff.

Earlier, a video related to the incident went viral on social media, purportedly showing a student’s family members assaulting teachers and staff inside the college campus. However, the student’s family has presented a different version of the incident. They alleged that the teachers assaulted their son during the examination and detained him for nearly two hours.

The dispute reportedly began on June 4 during an examination at the college. According to college officials, two students were found allegedly copying from each other’s answer sheets. Members of the examination committee questioned the students and one of them was asked to submit a written apology before being allowed to continue the exam. The situation escalated on June 5 when one of the student’s father Kandwal and other family members allegedly arrived at the college. Teachers have accused the group of entering the campus, arguing with staff members and assaulting teachers and employees. They also alleged that the group created a disturbance and interfered with official work at the institution.

Meanwhile, police have registered the complaints from both sides. The police circle officer (Sadar) Ankit Kandari said that cross-complaints have been registered. One side has alleged that the student was assaulted during the examination, while teachers have accused the student’s family members of attacking college staff. The college teachers and employees staged a protest on the college campus on Saturday. They wore black armbands while performing their duties and demanded strict legal action against those responsible for the incident. Police officials said that the matter is under investigation and further action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
