The Animal Husbandry department has intensified efforts to prevent and contain the spread of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) among livestock in Tehri district, with 39 dedicated teams deployed across affected and vulnerable areas for vaccination and awareness campaigns.

The chief veterinary officer, Dr D K Sharma said that the department is maintaining heightened vigilance to protect livestock and contain the disease. “Vaccination, sanitisation, vector control and awareness programmes are being carried out across rural and urban areas. The 39 special teams are conducting door-to-door vaccination drives, while fogging and lime spraying are being undertaken in coordination with local bodies to control flies, mosquitoes and other insects that may contribute to the transmission of the disease,” he added.

He further said that the situation in the district remains under control, with Quick Response Teams (QRTs) working round the clock. He urged livestock owners not to panic but to contact the nearest veterinary hospital or departmental team immediately if symptoms are detected.

The department is organising awareness camps to educate livestock owners about the early symptoms of Lumpy Skin Disease, preventive measures and the proper management of infected animals.

Farmers have been advised to immediately isolate animals showing symptoms such as fever, skin nodules, discharge from the eyes or nose and swelling in the legs. They have also been urged to maintain cleanliness in cattle sheds and enclosures and use recommended insecticides to control vectors.

The officials have advised livestock owners to avoid unnecessary movement and buying or selling of animals during disease outbreaks, while taking appropriate precautions when allowing animals to graze in open areas.

The department is also providing guidance on traditional preventive practices like using neem-leaf smoke around cattle sheds in valley areas and offering giloy water to animals.
