In order to contribute its bit to the conservation of the environment as part of the ongoing plantation drive across the State to mark the ongoing Harela, The Pioneer, Dehradun edition, organised a sapling distribution event on Tuesday to contribute towards environmental conservation. The event was aimed especially at involving the general public to boost greenery in the urban area instead of the usual trend of planting saplings along forest fringe areas. More than 100 saplings of fruit, medicinal, flowering trees and plants were distributed on the occasion. The distribution was supported by the Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL), and UJVN Limited (UJVNL). In support of this initiative, girls selected under the Udayan Shalini Fellowship programme, along with its district coordinator Farah also participated in the activity. UJVNL PRO and convenor of the fellowship, Vimal Dabral also played an active role.
Many local residents expressed their gratitude for the free sapling distribution, with many stating their intention to plant these saplings near their homes, gardens or within their communal space. Speaking on the occasion, local resident Shakil commended the initiative of distributing saplings to the public. He said that he took a Guava sapling and emphasised his personal interest in tree planting. In addition to his hobby of planting trees, he shared that his garden is filled with both flower and fruit plants. The primary goal of tree planting, he emphasised, is to contribute to a healthier environment and enhance the supply of oxygen, he added.
Another local resident Amar Shekhar, who also took a few saplings, expressed his passion for planting trees. Recognising the increasing temperatures experienced this year, he emphasised that planting trees has become all the more important now to preserve the environment for future generations. He took a sapling for his residence and another for his office.
Another local resident RS Rawat expressed his gratitude for the Neem sapling he received, acknowledging the positive impact such initiatives have on encouraging people to plant trees. He plans to plant the sapling on his society’s roadside, where he has already dug holes for planting trees.
Many other local residents also joined the initiative, pledging to contribute to the creation of a sustainable environment by planting saplings to make the city greener.
