Dehradun police arrested a 23-year-old man and seized around 500 kg of illegal cow meat during a checking drive in the Raiwala area on Thursday. Police registered a case against the accused under the Uttarakhand Bovine Protection Act. The accused, identified as Mohd Aman, is a resident of Kargi Chowk in Dehradun.
The superintendent of police, Dehradun, Pramendra Dobal said that a team was checking vehicles at Nepali Farm T-junction when they received information about a suspicious van coming from the Haridwar side. “Our team signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver tried to escape by speeding towards Chhidderwala. During the chase, the van hit the rear of a truck and the driver got trapped inside the vehicle,” Dobal said.
Police rescued him and searched the van. They recovered about 500 kg of meat packed in 10 sacks. The accused is said to have told police that he had brought the meat from Bijnor and was going to supply it at different places in Dehradun. “Two of his associates were following him on a motorcycle, but fled upon seeing the police team,” Dobal informed.
Police sources further said that a veterinary officer had confirmed that it was cow meat following a test. Subsequently, police registered a case against the accused under 3/5/11 Uttarakhand Bovine Protection Act and seized the van used for transportation.
Dobal said that efforts are underway to arrest the other two accused involved in the case. “We are on the lookout for them and they will be arrested soon,” he assured.
