Traffic junctions upgrade under NCAP to improve road safety & ease traffic flow

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Monday has prepared a proposal under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) for the comprehensive improvement and modernisation of major traffic junctions in the city. The initiative aims to improve traffic flow, strengthen road safety, reduce congestion and lower vehicular air pollution.

According to the proposal discussed in a meeting with officials concerned, key traffic junctions will be upgraded using scientific traffic management principles. The proposed works include improvement of junction geometry, construction of free left turns, proper lane development, safe footpaths and zebra crossings for pedestrians, refuge islands, modern traffic signage, thermoplastic road markings, reflective studs, crash barriers, road safety equipment, smart traffic signals and where required, CCTV cameras and AI-based traffic monitoring systems. The proposal also includes beautification of the junctions through the development of green belts, landscaping, ornamental plantations, decorative lighting, public art installations and elements reflecting the city’s cultural identity to create a better urban environment.

Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that the scientific redesign of traffic junctions would not only improve traffic management but also help reduce road accidents, save travel time, lower fuel consumption and improve air quality. He said that the proposal is in line with the objectives of NCAP and will help make the city safer, cleaner and more environment-friendly. The proposal will now be sent to the competent authority for technical and administrative approval. Once approved, the works will be executed as per the prescribed standards and timelines.Regional transport officer Anita Chamola, police circle officer (Traffic) Jagdish C Pant, deputy municipal commissioner Tanveer Singh Marwah and PWD officials were also present in the meeting.
