Transport department asks UTC to display ‘Be Kind to Animals’ on buses

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

In a bid to promote kindness towards animals and ensure their safety on roads, the Transport department has directed the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) to display the slogan ‘Be Kind to Animals’ and its Hindi translation on all public transport vehicles from April 1. This initiative follows a directive from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the secretary of the State Transport Authority (STA) Sanat Kumar Singh said.

He said that the move aims to raise awareness about animal welfare among commuters and drivers, emphasising compassion towards stray and domestic animals that often face risks on busy roads. He said that to ensure maximum visibility, the MoRTH’s directive specifies that the slogan should be displayed with a minimum character height of 150 milimetre on the exterior of the vehicles.

Authorities have been given flexibility to choose a font colour that contrasts well with the vehicle’s base colour to enhance readability. The message can be either painted or placed as a sticker, depending on feasibility. Singh said that all public transport vehicles in Uttarakhand, including buses operated by the State, have been asked to display the slogan from the next month.
