The Transport department’s two-day free special health check-up and road safety awareness camp for the drivers and conductors of city buses operating in the city commenced at Rangers Ground, Dehradun on Wednesday.
The regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Dehradun division, Anita Chamola said the objective of the camp is to conduct regular health check-ups for drivers to prevent road accidents, ensure safe driving during the monsoon and promote clean and safe public transport.
According to officials, all bus drivers and conductors underwent general health check-ups, eye exams, blood pressure and blood sugar tests, along with a complete health evaluation by a physician. Specialist doctors and a paramedical team from Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital provided their services during the camp. The doctors also offered valuable information on health precautions during vehicle operation and emphasised the importance of regular health check-ups.
In light of the monsoon season, RI technical Vikas Kumar conducted a thorough technical inspection of all vehicles at the camp. The inspection covered essential safety equipment, including vehicle wipers, spare wipers, headlights, indicators, brake lights, tire conditions and the braking system. Drivers were also given necessary technical precautions and maintenance guidelines to ensure safe and smooth operation during the rainy season, the officials said.
The department also distributed eco-friendly garbage bags to each bus. Vehicle operators were encouraged to collect waste generated during their journeys in these bags and dispose of it in designated dustbins only.
Chamola stated, “Road safety isn’t just about following traffic rules; it’s equally important for drivers to be physically and mentally healthy. A healthy driver is the most critical component of a safe journey. The Transport department will continue to organize such health check-ups regularly to ensure passenger safety.”
She appealed to all vehicle owners and drivers to maintain their vehicles regularly, strictly follow traffic rules and prioritize the safety of passengers.
