Worm allegedly found in food at Doon University girls’ hostel has raised apprehension and questions over facilities provided to students inside hostel premises.
The incident came to light when students created a ruckus over food quality and staged a protest outside the university vice-chancellor’s residence recently. Regarding this, the University administration has removed the mess concerned. According to the reports, a day before student council elections, Doon University witnessed a late-night ruckus after a worm was allegedly found in food served in the mess. According to students, the insect was found in dinner served on Monday night.
Angered by this, students, especially girl students, created a ruckus over mess management and food quality. The matter escalated when a large number of students reached outside the VC residence late at night and raised slogans. They remained there till late at night demanding improved mess facilities. On getting information, police and the chief proctor reached the spot and pacified students.
Video of the incident has also gone viral on social media, raising concerns over facilities provided at Doon University.
Commenting on action taken, registrar of the University Durgesh Dimri said the matter was concerning and has been acknowledged by the university administration. He said the current mess holder’s tenure for the girls’ hostel was already over, but due to the tender process being underway, the tenure was extended. However, after a ruckus over worms found in hostel food, the administration has removed the mess holder and temporarily given food-providing responsibility to another vendor till the tender process is completed.
Dimri added that a four- to five-member committee has also been formed, which will investigate the matter and submit a report; along with it, it will also ensure such negligence does not happen again in the university hostel.
He said Rs 2200 is charged to students at the hostel for three meals a day.
