Chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in Uttarakhand before November 9 this year. He said this after laying the foundation of the bar association building and participating in the Bhumi Pujan at the new court campus at the old district jail here on Tuesday. Greeting the advocates for the foundation laying of their chambers, the chief minister said that the occasion was historic. He said the judicial infrastructure is being strengthened in Uttarakhand and other parts of India under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Efforts are also being undertaken to expedite other works related to the development of the judicial infrastructure in the nation. Dhami said that the Modi government had spent more than Rs 8,000 crore to strengthen the judicial infrastructure during the past 10 years.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, the CM said that the Central government has implemented new laws to replace colonial era laws in order to meet the requirements of the present times. “The concept of law and justice will gain strength with the implementation of these new laws. Electronic and digital records have also gained recognition as strong evidence under the new laws which is vital in this digital era. This will also help all advocates to present their stand effectively and conveniently in the court. The State government is also committed to strengthening all law related infrastructures in the State,” the CM said.

Dhami further said that the demand for the chamber building of Dehradun bar association was pending for a long time. More than 5,500 persons are working in the court premises. Considering the issues faced by all the people, a decision was taken to allocate a five bigha area of land to the bar association. “I am happy that this land will be used for construction of 1,500 chambers, one auditorium, library, canteen, parking and a nine-storeyed building. The government will provide all possible assistance for the construction of this facility,” the CM said.

Dhami further said that the State government had enacted a strict anti-copying law in addition to laws against religious conversion and against rioters. “Uttarakhand is being seen as a disciplined State following the implementation of these laws. We are viewed as a State with zero tolerance for crime,” he added.

Cabinet minister Prem Chand Aggrawal, MLAs Vinod Chamoli, Khajan Das, Umesh Sharma ‘Kau’, Savita Kapoor, district judge Prem Singh Khimwal and Dehradun bar association head Rajiv Sharma were also present on the occasion.
