The Uttarakhand Jal Sansthan (UJS) has started making necessary preparations for the upcoming Kanwad Yatra. The chief general manager DK Singh informed that the UJS plays two key roles during the Kanwad Yatra. First, ensuring adequate water supply in public toilets along with drinking water facilities. Second, the treatment of liquid sewage waste generated during the event.
For this, the UJS has made initial arrangements. To ensure water supply, the UJS will maintain regular water availability in public toilets and has installed water structures for drinking water. Singh added that two types of toilets are used during the Kanwad Yatra in Haridwar: permanent and temporary. The permanent toilets are directly linked to sewer lines, while suction machines are used to dispatch waste from temporary toilets, which is later used for treatment. Singh said that once the machines dispatch the sewage waste, the process of treatment begins. In Haridwar, the treatment plants are in two complexes. Once the waste is dispatched, it goes for treatment over there and gets treated. He further informed that in the public toilets during the Kanwad, water is filled and refilled with the help of tankers. For this, the nearby shop vendors become a source for them who inform the officials concerned about the refilling of water at the public toilets.
Singh informed that currently the initial preparations for the Kanwad Yatra are going on. He said that this year for the Yatra, the UJS has made the proposed action plan for drinking water and sewer arrangements. The arrangements will cover Haridwar, Roorkee, Piran Kaliyar, Manglaur, Rishikesh, Lakshman Jhula, Swargashram, Muni ki Reti, Dhalwala, Tapovan and Neelkanth. For Kanwad Yatra, the UJS will have 76 fitters, labourers, drivers and field staff members over there. The installation of 92 stand posts, 82 tankers, DG sets (additional generators) four, TTSP 42, 56 suction vehicles and 25 cleaning supervisors, he said.
He further informed that he is also planning to have access to water LED displays for the Kanwad where he can display the water quality status to the visitors.
Singh further appealed to the visitors coming during Kanwad Yatra to ensure to use the public toilets instead of doing it in the open, as it can be harmful and spread various ailments to others.
