Leaders and workers of the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) demonstrated in Dehradun on Saturday protesting against the arrest of their senior leaders in Gairsain when they were demanding prompt announcement of the town as the permanent capital of the State while the budget session was underway. On the call of the party president Surendra Kukreti, the Dehradun metropolitan unit organised a demonstration during which the State government was torched in effigy Dron Chowk.
The party leaders alleged that the arrest of senior UKD leaders Kashi Singh Airi and Pushpesh Tripathi, along with other workers, and the house arrest of their youth wing president Ashish Negi is a direct attack on democratic values. Addressing the agitators, Praveen Ramola said that the arrests are an attempt to smother the voice of the people.
The central vice-president Ashutosh Negi said the government is trying to gag the collective voice demanding Gairsain as the capital.
