U’khand votes today to elect urban governments in 100 civic bodies

The stage is set for voting in the 100 urban local bodies of the State on Thursday. In the polls, 30,83,500 ( 15,89,467 male and 14,93,519 female) voters are eligible to exercise their franchise and they will decide the fate of 5,405 candidates which are in the fray. The voting will commence at 8 am and end at 5 pm. The State Election Commission and the administration has made all the preparations for the free and fair elections of the ULBs.
The elections will be held in 11 municipal corporations, 43 Nagar Palikas and 46 Nagar Panchayats in the State. In the 11 Municipal Corporations a total of 19,56,589 voters will elect 540 councillors and Mayors while 8,04,324 strong electorate will elect 43 Chairpersons and 444 members in 43 municipal councils of the State. In the 46 Nagar Panchayats there are 3,02,560 voters. They will elect 46 chairpersons and 298 members.
A total of 72 candidates are in fray for the position of Mayor in 11 municipal corporations while 445 candidates are trying their luck for the position of chairpersons in the Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats of the State. There are 4,888 candidates in the fray for the post of ward members in all the civic bodies of the State.
The State Election Commission has set up 1,518 polling stations and 3,393 polling booths for the ULB polls. The SEC has declared 601 polling stations and 1292 polling booths as sensitive while 422 polling stations and 1,078 polling stations have been declared as hyper sensitive.
The State administration has declared a public holiday on Thursday to facilitate the voters on the day of voting.
