The Uttar Pradesh Irrigation department is planning to remove encroachments from land under its purview in Haridwar.
Talking to The Pioneer, its executive engineer Vikas Tyagi elaborated on the department’s anti-encroachment plans and development activities. He said that encroachment is a serious issue which has led to confrontations several times in the past. Removal of encroachments is also affected by the unavailability of police in some places. “Now we are elaborately mapping the land under our purview and preparing to demarcate all the land and remove encroachments from it wherever required. Work is underway on a war footing to remove all types of encroachment. The UP government is serious about removing encroachments. We hope to get adequate force for this, otherwise we will use another option. We are in regular communication with the administration and are determined to free UP Irrigation department’s land from encroachments,” he said.
Regarding development works, he said that a multi-informative display at Bhimgoda barrage will display the level and temperature of water in the Ganga here. The damaged gate of the flat zone has been repaired. Stating that negligible work had been done since the construction of the barrage, he said that repair works have been started and the railing is also being replaced. To prevent locals from dumping garbage in the canal, railings have been erected along with. Tyagi said that all efforts will be made to improve the hydraulic system in Haridwar in the future. Regarding his dream project, he said that the department will optimise its hydraulic structures here which will also improve water supply. “We are trying to do better work in Haridwar. The UP government under chief minister Yogi Adityanath is very alert when it comes to the Ganga river and it will not allow any budgetary constraints to affect works related to the Ganga,” Tyagi said.
