Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has expressed doubts over a recent survey conducted by the National Commission for Women (NCW) under the National Annual Report and Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025, claiming that NCW did not undertake such a survey.
This statement follows a report indicating that, according to NARI 2025, Dehradun has been ranked among the bottom 10 cities in terms of women’s safety out of 31 cities surveyed across India. The report, based on responses from over 12,700 women in 31 cities highlights the opinions of the respondents on safety standards and gaps in policing and public security.
Expressing her views, Kandwal stated that upon hearing about the survey, she quickly contacted NCW chairwoman Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar. She claimed that during their conversation, Rahatkar completely rejected the survey and clarified that it was not conducted by the NCW. Kandwal emphasised that the commission is committed to ensuring a decline in crimes against women and other related activities throughout the State.
She said that she regularly communicates with the police administration to discuss plans related to women’s safety across the State. Additionally, she assured that whenever cases concerning women’s safety are brought to the commission’s attention, they take prompt action and communicate with the relevant officials.
Kandwal urged any women facing issues like eve-teasing, harassment or any other troubles to report them to the commission either by calling 8126774374 or emailing the official USCW email address.
She also highlighted the impact of social media on women’s safety, stating that its misuse has contributed to crimes, particularly against women. Kandwal encouraged families and parents to actively monitor their children’s social media usage to help reduce risks. Further, she noted that awareness among women about reporting crimes has increased, creating a more supportive environment for women to speak out about such issues.
