USDMA & IIRS to sign MoU for use of latest technology in disaster management
The Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will undertake an urban flood related study on the settlements along the Rispana and Bindal rivers in Dehradun using a drone along with a micro climate study of Dehradun city. IIRS senior scientist Arijit Roy said this in a meeting with officials of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA).
He informed that the drone will be used to make high resolution images and areas where blockages are likely in case of heavy rain will be identified. Areas along the rivers which are likely to be submerged will also be marked. This study is proposed to be executed within a one year period by experts of USDMA along with IIRS scientists.
In the meeting, the USDMA additional CEO Ridhim Agrawal directed that an MoU be signed with IIRS for collaboration on other disaster related subjects. The MoU will be signed soon to give a final shape to the collaboration between USDMA and IIRS.
Agrawal informed that as part of the study being undertaken by USDMA and IIRS, some areas have been identified while work is underway to identify other areas. An MoU is planned between the institute and the authority to encourage the use of latest technology for search and rescue as part of disaster management. At present, there are 108 automatic weather stations, 28 rain gauges, 16 snow gauges and 25 surface field observatories aimed at strengthening weather-based advance warning system. The data collected from these is being shared with IIRS and other weather related research institutions which will help in mitigating the damage caused by disasters in the future, she added.
