Uttarakhand Police have completed preparations to ensure the safe and smooth conduct of the Kanwad Yatra slated to begin on July 30. Crores of Kanwadiyas are expected to visit the State during the annual pilgrimage. Garhwal inspector general of police (IG) Rajeev Swaroop said that the police are fully prepared to provide security, manage traffic and ensure the convenience of devotees.

Speaking to reporters, the IG said the Kanwad Yatra will begin later this month. The main routes of the Yatra in Uttarakhand include those in Haridwar, Rishikesh, Tehri and Pauri. He said that the police have received the required security forces and are providing deployment as per the demand.

Swaroop said that letters have been sent to the authorities concerned in the States from where Kanwadiyas begin their journey. They have been requested to ensure that the size of the Kanwads and the sound systems used remain within the prescribed limits. He also said that only authorised passenger vehicles should be used by the pilgrims.

The IG said that all Kanwadiyas are welcome but warned that strict action would be taken against anyone who creates trouble or disturbs law and order in the guise of a Kanwadiya.

He informed that the State has requested the Central government to provide 25 additional companies of Central Paramilitary Forces along with four bomb disposal squads and dog squads for the Yatra.

Swaroop added that SSPs and SPs in all districts have already held coordination and peace committee meetings. Traffic management plans have also been prepared. A joint meeting between Haridwar and Bijnor police officers was recently held to strengthen coordination. The IG said the entire Garhwal region is fully prepared for the Kanwad Yatra.
