Uttarakhand Police gears up for urban local body elections on Jan 23

In preparation for the polling in the urban local body elections on January 23, the Uttarakhand Police have identified 592 sensitive and 412 hyper-sensitive polling booths across the State, ensuring heightened security measures.
The inspector general (Law and Order) and nodal officer for the elections Nilesh Anand Bharne stated that comprehensive arrangements have been implemented to maintain peace and order during the electoral process. He informed that a total of 185 barriers have been established and 117 CCTV cameras have been installed for efficient surveillance.
Since the enforcement of the model code of conduct on December 24, the police have intensified efforts to curb illegal activities. The police have seized 344 kilogrammes of narcotics valued at approximately Rs 13.43 crore and 16,700 litres of illicit alcohol worth about Rs 89.5 lakh since MCC implementation, Bharne said. The police have also registered 2,066 cases in which they penalised 17,196 individuals. They also identified and restrained 10,201 anti-social elements as a preventive measure against potential threats during the elections.
He informed that about 12,000 police personnel have been deployed across the State to ensure a secure and transparent electoral process. Bharne said that the Uttarakhand police are committed to leaving no stone unturned to maintain law and order during this crucial period and will ensure voters vote in a peaceful election environment in every booth.
