Uttarakhand to install 331 more earthquake warning sensors: Uniyal

The Parliamentary Affairs minister Subodh Uniyal said that the number of sensors under the Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) in the State will be increased to 500. He said that there are a total of 169 sensors in different parts of the State.
Responding to a question by the Manglaur MLA Qazi Nizamuddin in Vidhan Sabha on Thursday, Uniyal said that under the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme more sensors will be deployed in the State and they will be installed at principal thrust fault zones.
The sensors will be installed on the Himalayan Frontal Thrust, Main Boundary Thrust, Main Boundary Thrust, Main Central Thrust and other sensitive areas such as Uttarakhand- Nepal border and Himachal Pradesh- Uttarakhand border.
The minister said that a sum of Rs 169 crore has been spent on installation of 169 sensors while more sensors will be installed with a sum of Rs 153.44 crore under the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme (NERMP). He further informed that the sensors will be installed on the basis of the geological survey and mapping.
