Uttarkashi superintendent of police Kamlesh Upadhyay stressed on the need for increasing public awareness on various types of crimes and related issues. She said this while holding a public interaction at the Purola police station in the district on Sunday. The SP discussed issues including gender crimes, cybercrimes, road traffic safety and substance abuse. Administering an oath to the gathering for raising public awareness, she said that the participation of society is essential for effectively clamping down on crime. The more aware society is, the more effective will be the action against substance abuse, cybercrime and gender crimes, Upadhyay said. Expressing concern at the rise in cybercrime, she appealed to the public to remain alert in order to avoid being duped by frauds. The people were also told to use social media and digital platforms carefully, and not to share one-time passwords with anybody. The SP also asked the public to immediately lodge a complaint on the helpline number 1930 in case they have been targeted by a cyber criminal.

Regarding road traffic safety, she stressed on the importance of all citizens following traffic rules. The SP appealed to the public to use seatbelts and helmets, abstain from speeding and overloading, not to indulge in rash driving and to never use a vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. Laying emphasis on the need to check substance abuse, she said that keeping the youths away from addictions is a collective responsibility. Details of the person providing information about the smuggling and sale of illegal alcohol and drugs will be kept fully confidential, she assured. The SP also assured the people gathered on the occasion that the police is eager to ensure redressal of public grievances, adding that no complaint will be overlooked.
