Vigilance team arrests constable taking Rs 45 k bribe

The Vigilance department arrested a police constable in Nainital district for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 45,000 from a mining contractor. The accused constable, identified as Deepak Singh, was posted at Betalghat police station.

According to the Vigilance officials, the complainant had called the toll-free helpline number 1064.  He said he works on a government mining lease for extracting river bed material and added that his vehicles are used to transport the materials from the mining sites to local stone crushers.

The complainant alleged that constable Singh kept creating unnecessary problems in transporting the RBM while threatening to issue challans and seize vehicles. In return for allowing smooth transportation, the constable allegedly demanded Rs 45,000 as bribe, the complaint ran.

After verifying the complaint, the Vigilance sector Haldwani team registered a case and formed a trap team. On May 25, the team caught the accused constable red-handed while accepting the bribe from the complainant.

The accused constable is a resident of Bilhari area in Khatima, Udham Singh Nagar district. Vigilance officials said that further investigation is underway in the case.

The director, Vigilance, V Murugesan appealed to the people to report corruption- related complaints on the toll-free helpline number 1064 and WhatsApp helpline number 9456592300.
