Women of the Badethi village in Uttarkashi district have sought action from the authorities to check activities of the liquor mafia in the village. Headed by Gram Pradhan Rampyari Devi, the women submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate seeking concrete steps to stop bootlegging. The women have stated in the memorandum that the liquor mafia is delivering liquor at homes which has affected the atmosphere in the homes and the marketplace. They warned that they will stage an agitation if the required action is not taken. The Mahila Mangal Dal also passed a proposal for Rs 21,000 penalty and social boycott for serving liquor in marriage functions in the village. Social worker Geeta Gairola has requested the district magistrate and district excise officer to intervene in this matter and take strict action against bootleggers in the area.
Locals state that the district police do periodically catch small and sizeable consignments of illicit liquor being smuggled. However, so far this has not prevented the activities of the liquor mafia in the Badethi village. It remains to be seen whether the authorities act in a timely and effective manner to check the bootlegging and its ill-effects in this area.
