PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) has taken cognisance of an alleged attempt to kidnap a woman in broad daylight at Nalapani Chowk area of the city. USCW chairwoman Kusum Kandwal has directed police to take strict action and probe every angle in the case.
Kandwal said that according to reports, a local woman living near Nalapani Chowk was returning home on a scooty after dropping her daughter bus when masked men in a black car chased her and attempted to forcibly drag her into the vehicle. Due to the victim’s courage and timely intervention of sanitation workers present nearby, the kidnapping attempt failed and the accused fled.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, she said she spoke to superintendent of police (Rural) Jaya Baluni and circle officer Vandana Verma over the phone and reviewed the incident in detail. Police officials informed that the case has been registered at Raipur police station under relevant sections and three special investigation teams have been formed and CCTV footage of the area is being examined to trace suspects.

Kandwal said that she has given strict directions to the police administration that such an incident in broad daylight in a busy area of the capital is inexcusable and three accused should be identified and arrested immediately. She directed police not to ignore any possibility and ensure fair and thorough investigation into every possible angle, including old enmity, mutual dispute or criminal conspiracy.

The USCW chief said that stringent legal action should be taken against anti-social elements who disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the State and create fear of insecurity among women, so that it becomes an example for the future and such incidents do not recur. She said that the commission is fully committed to protecting the safety, honour and self-respect of women in the State and is continuously monitoring the progress of the police investigation.
