The second post-mortem of the journalist Pankaj Mishra who had allegedly been beaten to death on late Monday night has been held on Wednesday. Notably, the family members of the deceased had demanded the same.
On the complaint of his brother Arvind Mishra, the police had registered a case against journalist Amit Sehgal at Rajpur police station. The FIR includes serious charges such as murder, robbery and assault.
According to the police investigating the case, the case was registered on December 16 night under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Arvind Mishra, a resident of Alambagh in Lucknow, had alleged that on the night of December 15, Amit Sehgal had come into Pankaj Mishra’s rented house in Jakhan, Dehradun, along with another person and the duo had punched and kicked him brutally on his chest and stomach. When Pankaj’s wife Laxmi had tried to call the police, she was also assaulted and misbehaved with, as per the FIR registered. His mobile phone had been snatched away from her, the FIR stated.
After the attack, Pankaj informed the police using another’s mobile phone. The police reached the spot, but the family decided to get the medical examination done the next morning. In the early hours of December 16, around 3 AM, Pankaj’s health suddenly worsened. He collapsed at home and was taken to Government Doon Medical College hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police said that they are on the lookout for the accused. Importantly, while condoling the journalist’s death, the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had ordered a fair investigation into the case.
