In a boost to the health infrastructure in the State, the Health minister Dhan Singh Rawat inaugurated a modern genome sequencing lab at the Government Medical College Srinagar on Tuesday. The lab has been set up at a cost of Rs 285 lakh and will help in checking the samples for Covid-19 and other diseases.
At present such labs are functional in the Government Medical College Dehradun and Haldwani only. Speaking on the occasion Rawat expressed his gratitude towards the Union Health minister for cooperation in setting up the lab in Srinagar medical college. He informed that soon the genome sequencing lab would start in the Almora medical college also. Rawat said that all the labs of all the four medical colleges of the State have a capacity to test 2,000 samples each in a day.
The Health department has sought permission from the Indian SARS- CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics (INSACOG) of the union health ministry for the genome sequencing lab of Almora medical college.
In his visit the minister also met the students of the medical college and heard their grievances. Rawat inspected the library of the medical college and directed the administration to ensure that books of eminent authors and latest research papers are available in the library.
The director of medical education Dr Ashutosh Sayana, principal of Srinagar medical college Dr CMS Rawat, medical superintendent Dr Ravindra Bisht, faculty members and students were present on the occasion.
