Mahapanchayat postponed but many detained trying to reach Purola

A number of people attempted to reach Purola for the Mahapanchayat which was proposed to be held on Thursday but postponed on Wednesday. With section 144 in place, the police detained a number of persons before they could reach Purola.
Apart from imposing section 144 in Purola, the authorities had deployed heavy police force in Purola and neighbouring areas. Though the Mahapanchayat called against alleged love Jihad was postponed on Wednesday, many people still attempted to reach Purola on Thursday. The market places remained closed in Purola, Badkot and Naugaon.
Meanwhile, the police stopped people from going further from Naugaon. Some of these including members of organisations and business fraternity sat on protest near Naugaon which resulted in traffic jam on the road. The police detained a number of people and later released them. Elsewhere in the State, the incident in Purola and other parts of the State have continued to elicit opposition from locals in parts of the State.
The market in Chamba town of Tehri district remained closed in the morning in protest on Thursday. Members of the business fraternity and Hindu organisations also took out a protest march in the town. Those who addressed the protesters said that the people will not tolerate land and love Jihad in Uttarakhand under any circumstances. The authorities had deployed adequate police to ensure that the situation remained under control.
