The political affairs committee of Uttarakhand Congress held deliberations on Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and other issues in an online mode on Sunday. In the meeting the senior leaders discussed the strategy of the party. The in-charge of the Uttarakhand Congress Devendra Yadav said that the Modi government is treating Uttarakhand like a laboratory. He said that one should look at the draft before making any comment on the UCC.
Yadav said that the party should interact with everyone and then prepare an action plan and strategy on the issue. He suggested that the party should take out five Yatras in Pauri, Haridwar, Almora, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts on the different issues of public interest. Speaking on the occasion, the former chief minister Harish Rawat said that the BJP government has brought up the issue of UCC only to hide failures of its government. He said that BJP is running away from discussions on increasing prices, unemployment, women harassment and Ankita Bhandari case.
The leader of opposition (LoP), Yashpal Arya said that the UCC should not be limited to Hindu- Muslim subject. He said that the country is full of diversities and people of all castes live in the country.
The former Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president, Ganesh Godiyal said that the BJP always tries to fan communal sentiments to hide its failures. The national secretary of the Congress, Qazi Nizamuddin termed UCC as the old wine in a new bottle. He said that the UCC is a step in the direction of dissolving reservation.
The chairperson of the disciplinary committee of PCC, Navprabhat said that the PM and home minister are trying to intimidate the people.
The PCC president, Karan Mahara said that the party should take out the Swabhiman Yatra on the issue. He added that first such Yatra would be taken out in Pauri from July 17 to 22.
The deputy leader of Congress legislative party Bhuwan Kapdi, MLA Sumit Hridayesh and heads of frontal organisations of Congress also participated in discussions.
