Kumari directs officials to ensure timely release of women inmates from district jail
The member of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Mamta Kumari directed the departments concerned to organise health check-up camps at the district hospital on the 9th and 21st of every month. She said this while inspecting the important places of Dehradun in terms of women’s and elderly people’s safety.
Kumari started the inspection on November 17 and concluded it on November 18. Commenting on the inspection at the district hospital of Dehradun, Kumari said that she directed the officials to disseminate important health-related schemes of the Central government to as many people as possible. To achieve this, camps are being organised on the 9th and 21st of every month in the health centres on a large scale. Other departmental officers’ cooperation should also be taken in this work. Important telephone numbers must be compulsorily marked on the mother-child card. Kumari further emphasised the need to pay special attention to the training of personnel. The NCW member said that during the inspection of the district jail, it was found that women who had completed their sentences had to spend an additional four months due to incomplete records. The process needs to be improved so that all records are completed six months before the completion of the sentence, allowing for the timely release of the person concerned. Investigating officers should conduct a thorough investigation and determine charges in the case. The police department should strive for transparency and run awareness programmes to remove any misconceptions prevalent among the general public, Kumari added.
Apart from this, she directed the officials of Nari Niketan which is located in Kedarpuram that a day should be designated for the women and girls living there to talk to their families in order to provide them with mental satisfaction. Language translators for women and girls from other states are important to enable them to communicate their problems effectively. Additionally, she directed the officials to make meaningful efforts to send them to their families. Polling booths should also be arranged within the institution so that the women and girls can easily exercise their franchise during elections, she said.
